Pixar Animation Studios and Disney Studios Motion Pictures produced the computer-animated fantasy comedy film Turning Red in 2022. Domee Shi directed (in her feature directorial debut), Julia Cho wrote, and Lindsey Collins made the film. Voices are provided by Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong. Meilin "Mei" Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student, turns into a giant red panda whenever she expresses strong emotions in 2002's Turning Red. A film based on Shi's experiences growing up in Toronto began development in 2018 after she pitched it to Pixar in October 2017. It is the first Pixar film directed by a woman and the second with an Asian lead character after Up (2009). Turning Red was screened at Everyman Borough Yards in London on February 21, 2022, and at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto on March 8. A world premiere of the film was held at the Los Angeles El Capitan Theater on March 1. After that, it was released on the Disney+ streaming service and in limited theaters. After that, the movie was released theatrically in most countries without Disney+, grossing $17.1 million worldwide.
